Criteria

Question 1: Does species need conservation or recovery in England?
Response: No
Justification: Atlas 3 (Foster et al, 2020) shows post-1980 records for around 17 English hectads, with more in Wales. It occurs all around the English coast where suitable habitats exist. While there are indications of decline, e.g. around the Humber and Solway, these could in part reflect the changing habits and collecting methods of coleopterists.
Question 2: Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions?
Response: No
Justification: Augyles maritimus belongs to a suite of coastal water beetles vulnerable to sea level rise and coastal squeeze. A range of generic actions may benefit this species, including ensuring that the needs of this species are considered in coastal defence and managed realignment schemes to restore the full transition of habitats from freshwater grazing marsh to inter-tidal. It is less likely to benefit from species-specific measures.
Question 3: At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages?
Response: N/A
