Criteria

Question 1: Does species need conservation or recovery in England?
Response: Yes
Justification: Currently extinct in England but still widespread in South Wales (Lee & Rich 2021). Could be reintroduced to the four extinct English sites in the Wye Valley. Practical to restore though probably low priority given extent and stability in Wales.
Question 2: Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions?
Response: Yes
Justification: Not recorded in England since 1964.
Question 3: At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages?
Response: Yes
Justification: As for H. pachyphylloides, wider management of wooded cliff edges in Wye Valley would probably help this species

Species Assessment

Current step on the Species Recovery Curve (SRC): 5. Remedial action identified
Recovery potential/expectation: Medium-high
National Monitoring Resource: Opportunistic - insufficient
Species Comments: few specialist hawkweed surveyors but this a distinct species

Key Actions

Key Action 1

Proposed Action: Reintroduction programme from Welsh seed at Symonds Yat, Coldwell Rocks, Bangor and Great Doward practical

Action targets: 6. Recovery solutions trialled

Action type: (Re-)introduction

Duration: 3-5 years

Scale of Implementation: ≤ 5 sites

High priority sites: Lower Wye Gorge SSSI, Upper Wye Gorge SSSI

Comments: Low priority for Hieracium conservation given frequency and stability of subbritannicum in Wales

Key Action 2

Proposed Action: Promote awareness of the group amongst landowners, understanding of conservation requirements amongst conservation professionals and identification skills amongst field botanists e.g. via BSBI training resources and workshops

Action targets: 5. Remedial action identified

Action type: Advice & support

Duration: 3-5 years

Scale of Implementation: ≤ 100 sites

High priority sites:

Comments: generic action
