Criteria

Question 1: Does species need conservation or recovery in England?
Response: Yes
Justification: One extant site in England, threats present.
Question 2: Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions?
Response: Yes
Justification: A very small population at one known extant site. Known but unquantified threats from nitrogen deposition, invasive rhododendron, and lack of grazing some of which will require targeted action (Douglas, 2021).
Question 3: At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages?
Response: Yes
Justification: Part of a large group of species threatened by under grazing of old growth woodlands. Likely to benefit from diverse woodland structure, especially sheltered glades.

Species Assessment

Current step on the Species Recovery Curve (SRC): 4. Autecology and pressures understood
Recovery potential/expectation: Medium-high
National Monitoring Resource: Opportunistic - insufficient
Species Comments: Only known in England from one site in Cumbria, Stanley Ghyll.

Key Actions

Key Action 1

Proposed Action: Assess current status of Menegazzia subsimilis at Stanley Ghyll, identify threats and actions to address these.

Action targets: 5. Remedial action identified

Action type: Status survey/review

Duration: 1 year

Scale of Implementation: 1 site

High priority sites: Stanley Ghyll, Cumbria

Comments: Threats known to exist but current status of the species, the issues directly impacting it and the actions required to address these not known.

Key Action 2

Proposed Action: Undertake remedial action identified in Action 1. Likely to require Rhododendron ponticum control on steep ground and grazing management.

Action targets: 6. Recovery solutions trialled

Action type: Habitat management

Duration: 6-10 years

Scale of Implementation: 1 site

High priority sites: Stanley Ghyll, Cumbria
