Criteria

Question 1: Does species need conservation or recovery in England?
Response: Yes
Justification: Very small population known c15 trees and lost form several sites recently due to woodland under grazing, being reassessed as CR
Question 2: Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions?
Response: Yes
Justification: Extant populations are very small and require bespoke management and advice. Apparent loss form several sites due to under grazing, requiring management planning and restoration to former sites.
Question 3: At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages?
Response: Yes
Justification: Part of a large group of species threatened by under grazing of old growth woodlands

Species Assessment

Current step on the Species Recovery Curve (SRC): 4. Autecology and pressures understood
Recovery potential/expectation: Medium-high
National Monitoring Resource: Opportunistic - insufficient
Species Comments: Species dossier written, losses found due to undergrazing in Millook (Cornwall) and Clovelly to Peppercombe (Devon), sustainable if small populations in the New Forest and the Dizzard (Cornwall).

Key Actions

Key Action 1

Proposed Action: Targeted survey for this species at Clovelly deer park and adjacent cliff.

Action targets: 3. National Monitoring Plan agreed and implemented

Action type: Targeted monitoring

Duration: 1 year

Scale of Implementation: 1 site

High priority sites: Clovelly deer park and cliffs

Comments:

Key Action 2

Proposed Action: Targeted habitat management to reverse increasing shade by thinning, supported by a managed and sustainable grazing/browsing regime.

Action targets: 5. Remedial action identified

Action type: Habitat management

Duration: >10 years

Scale of Implementation: 1 site

High priority sites: Clovelly - Peppercombe

Comments: This action is identified in Sanderson 2020 Porina effilata & Arthonia anglica Clovelly to Peppercombe North Devon & Arthonia anglica in the New Forest Hampshire 2020

Key Action 3

Proposed Action: Survey coastal (or near coastal) woodlands in North Devon and North Cornwall between Peppercombe and Dizzard for the species

Action targets: 3. National Monitoring Plan agreed and implemented

Action type: Targeted monitoring

Duration: 3-5 years

Scale of Implementation: ≤ 50 sites

High priority sites:

Comments: With reference to 19thC maps there are many former open woodland sites in the valleys between Hartland Point and the Dizzard, with similar structure and aspect to the Clovelly coast and the Dizzard e.g. Marsland, Welcome, Hartland. These would be well worth surveying for this species (and others).
