Criteria
Question 1: | Does species need conservation or recovery in England? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | Although this species remains plentiful at some sites along the south coast from Kent to South Devon, it continues to decline at sites inland, particularly in the Peak District (Staffordshire and Derbyshire), where it has been recorded from around 28 monads since 2000. Assessments based on current data suggest it should now be regarded as VU (Cooke, pers comm). |
Question 2: | Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | Sites are now so small and localised it can only recover if site-specific action is taken. |
Question 3: | At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages? |
Response: | No |
Justification: | This species would not benefit from untargeted management |
Species Assessment
Current step on the Species Recovery Curve (SRC): | 5. Remedial action identified |
Recovery potential/expectation: | Low - Extinction debt |

Key Actions
Key Action 1
Proposed Action: Implement appropriate habitat management, especially grazing levels, at sites in the Peak District.
Action targets: 7. Best approach adopted at appropriate scales
Action type: Habitat management
Duration: 6-10 years
Scale of Implementation: ≤ 10 sites
High priority sites: Monks Dale, Hall Dale
Comments:
Key Action 2
Proposed Action: Ensure areas near to existing sites are managed appropriately, with grazing, scrub clearance and provision of scrapes (possibly with reintroduction of seed) allowing the species to spread.
Action targets: 7. Best approach adopted at appropriate scales
Action type: Habitat management
Duration: 6-10 years
Scale of Implementation: ≤ 20 sites
High priority sites:
Comments:
Key Action 3
Proposed Action: Support the ongoing project to reintroduce the species using the most appropriate donor populations, to Nottingham Castle, the site after which the species is named following its discovery in 1670.
Action targets: 7. Best approach adopted at appropriate scales
Action type: (Re-)introduction
Duration: 3-5 years
Scale of Implementation: Unknown
High priority sites: Nottingham Castle
