Criteria
Question 1: | Does species need conservation or recovery in England? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | A rare English species with sites on the De Lank River, Cornwall, lower River Lugg, and R.Teme at Ludlow. The headquarters of this species is probably in Wales. There is one Scottish site but it has not been seen there for many years. |
Question 2: | Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | There is only one recent English site but also some others which if confirmed would reduce the vulnerability of this species. |
Question 3: | At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages? |
Response: | No |
Justification: | This species has very specific needs and is not going to benefit from a mosaic of habitats |
Species Assessment
Current step on the Species Recovery Curve (SRC): | 2. Biological status assessment exists |
Recovery potential/expectation: | Medium-high |
National Monitoring Resource: | Combination - insufficient |
Species Comments: | River restoration planning usually include plans to maintain site morphology and enhance growth of plants such as Ranunculus fluitans which would benefit this species. This should be recorded in EA surveys but may be missed if these are not in May or June, the time of large larvae, so focussed surveys of Ranunculus and Milfoil in May or June is needed. |
Key Actions
Key Action 1
Proposed Action: Try and collect larvae from Ranunculus and also Milfoil which may be another plant it eats. along the De Lank, lower River Lugg and the Teme at Ludlow.
Action targets: 2. Biological status assessment exists
Action type: Targeted monitoring
Duration: 1 year
Scale of Implementation: ≤ 5 sites
High priority sites: Rivers De Lank, Teme at Ludlow and lower River Lugg.
Comments: The size and location of the populations in these rivers is not known.
