Criteria
Question 1: | Does species need conservation or recovery in England? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | GB Red List (Fox et al. 2022): NT. 24% decline in abundance since 1979 and a 6% short-term (10 year 2010-2019) decline; statistically significant 45% long-term decline in distribution since 1983 and a 14% short-term decline (Fox et al. 2023) |
Question 2: | Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | A wide variety of habitats can be used by Small Blue and can colonise newly created sites, especially if close to existing colonies. Maintaining early successional mosaic habitat with plentiful Kidney Vetch is required and where such management is targeted the species responds well. |
Question 3: | At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | The species has slowed in abundance and distribution trends; has low to moderate dispersal ability but appears quick to colonise nearby suitable sites and would benefit with availability of mosaic habitat at the landscape-scale. |
