Criteria

Question 1: Does species need conservation or recovery in England?
Response: No
Justification: While its association with seasonal pools makes it potentially vulnerable to climate change, A. uliginosus occupies a wider range of habitats than A. labiatus, H. rufifrons and the rare Dryops spp. There is less evidence of significant decline than in the case of A. labiatus, a species with which it sometimes occurs. In its strongholds in the Humber river basin, A. uliginosus dispar is frequent in seasonal pools in unimproved meadows and pastures and often occurs in smaller sites than other vernal pool specialists. It is probably capable of opportunistic breeding over a long seasonal period, making it relatively resilient.
Question 2: Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions?
Response: No
Justification: The easterly populations of var. dispar are not a high priority for species-specific action and may benefit from more generic measures. The type form is confined to southern England and may be more at-risk, so should be kept under review.
Question 3: At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages?
Response: N/A
