Criteria

Question 1: Does species need conservation or recovery in England?
Response: Yes
Justification: Scarce. Post-1979 English records from Rodwell, Dorset (vc9); Icklesham, East Sussex (vc14), Capel St. Mary and Brantham, both East Suffolk (vc25); Icklingham, West Suffolk (vc26); Moccas Park, Herefordshire (vc36); Blankney Fen, South Lincolnshire (vc53), Bardon Hill, Leicestershire (vc55); Peat Carr, Nottinghamshire (vc56); Hatfield Moor, South-west Yorkshire (vc63). Primarily associated with patch habitats such as carrion, decaying plant material and dung piles in wetland habitats.
Question 2: Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions?
Response: No
Justification: This species is associated with a wide range of patch habitats in wetland habitats. There are no obvious specific conservation actions that would benefit this species. The only identified potential threat is the widespread use of veterinary chemicals such as avermectins.
Question 3: At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages?
Response: Yes
Justification: Associated with patch habitats in wetlands. Grazing wetlands with cattle that have not been treated with avermectins etc. and creating litter piles with material produced by management may benefit this species.
