Criteria
Question 1: | Does species need conservation or recovery in England? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | Redlisted as Near Threatened (2012) - Based on larger Scottish distribution. Known only from a single English site in Cumbria. |
Question 2: | Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions? |
Response: | Yes |
Justification: | Without evidence of the national status of this species it will be very difficult to assess if there are any other species-specific actions required for its conservation; or if it is need of conservation at all. |
Question 3: | At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages? |
Response: | No |
Justification: | There is no evidence that an increase in the structural diversity of the habitat will directly benefit this species. |
Species Assessment
Current step on the Species Recovery Curve (SRC): | 2. Biological status assessment exists |
Recovery potential/expectation: | Unknown |
National Monitoring Resource: | Opportunistic - insufficient |
Species Comments: | There is a JNCC recognised redlist for GB, but that is over 10 years old and is influenced by records from Scotland. At the point of completion, the ongoing redlisting project had not re-assessed this species. The recovery potential is unknown due to there being very little information available about this species. However, it is known to be found on the bark of young hazel stems, in generally shaded woodland. |
Key Actions
Key Action 1
Proposed Action: A targeted survey of the single known English site (Cumbria) should be conducted.
Action targets: 2. Biological status assessment exists
Action type: Status survey/review
Duration: 1 year
Scale of Implementation: 1 site
High priority sites: Known site in Cumbria
Comments: If refound, its status may need reassessment according to IUCN guidelines. This species was Red List assessed in 2012 and has been proposed for reassessment.
Key Action 2
Proposed Action: Review habitat management at extant site and assess suitability for preventing any decline or extinction of this species.
Action targets: 5. Remedial action identified
Action type: Habitat management
Duration: 1 year
Scale of Implementation: 1 site
High priority sites: Known site in Cumbria
Comments: To maintain the existing population, the review will need to look at the best management for the target species, and the tree(s) on which it grows (young Corylus).
Key Action 3
Proposed Action: Seek getting protection of host tree(s), and other beneficial management into Site Management Plan.
Action targets: 7. Best approach adopted at appropriate scales
Action type: Advice & support
Duration: 1 year
Scale of Implementation: 1 site
High priority sites: Known site in Cumbria
