Criteria

Question 1: Does species need conservation or recovery in England?
Response: Yes
Justification: Polygonatum verticillatum is regionally extinct in England having been last recorded from its only known English site near to Smalesmouth on the North Tyne in 1866. This is near to the present day Kielder Water. It may also have occurred at a second site near by, also on the Tyne (Redesmouth).
Question 2: Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions?
Response: Yes
Justification: The only practical conservation measures are seed banking, ex situ propagation and reintroduction to suitable sites which should be considered given the programme by RGBE to cultivate and introduce it to historic sites over the border in Scotland.
Question 3: At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages?
Response: No
Justification: This species would not benefit from untargeted management
