Criteria

Question 1: Does species need conservation or recovery in England?
Response: Yes
Justification: Restricted to a small number of sites in S England, with c90% in the New Forest. Significant regional loses due to tree disease and sites threatened by increased shade in woodlands.
Question 2: Does recovery/ conservation depend on species-specific actions?
Response: Yes
Justification: A rare woodland specialist. Occurs on moderately flushed base-rich bark of mature Quercus, rarely Fagus, in shelter and humid old growth woodland, sometimes overgrowing bryophytes (BLS, 2025).Threats likely to require targeted action.
Question 3: At a landscape scale, would the species benefit from untargeted habitat management to increase habitat mosaics, structural diversity, or particular successional stages?
Response: Yes
Justification: Part of a large group of species threatened by under grazing of old growth woodlands. Likely to benefit from diverse woodland structure, especially sheltered glades.

Species Assessment

Current step on the Species Recovery Curve (SRC): 4. Autecology and pressures understood
Recovery potential/expectation: Unknown
National Monitoring Resource: Opportunistic - insufficient
Species Comments: Past confusion with other similar isidiate species exists and records require full confirmation. Decline is difficult to determine as mainly recorded accurately only in recent decades but there are significant regional loses to tree disease and sites threatened by increased shade in woodlands. Listed as EN in draft GB red list.
